Male Teens and Eating Disorders
This is National Eating Disorders Awareness week, with a theme of “Everybody Knows Somebody.” NED Awareness is asking everyone to do just one thing to help raise awareness.
So, here’s our contribution.
Did you know that while typically thought of as a female disorder, more than a million men and boys also battle eating disorders every day? Take a minute and listen to their stories here.
Unfortunately, their symptoms often go unnoticed. A recent article in the Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry suggests that many primary care clinicians do not routinely screen for eating disorders or include other family members in the treatment plan.
Do you feel comfortable screening for eating disorders? What are some barriers to detection and treatment? Please share your thoughts about this serious, life-threatening illness.
