Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan Helps Clinicians Reduce Uncompensated Care
Print This Post
A government program created in 2010 under the Affordable Care Act can help primary care clinicians reduce uncompensated care. The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) provides new options to many patients who have previously been unable to get health insurance. PCIP plans cover a broad range of health benefits, including primary and specialty care, hospital care, and prescription drugs.
In more than 20 states*, PCIP is provided through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and administered through the Office of Personnel Management by Government Employees Health Association (GEHA).
Important notes for primary care clinicians:
- PCIP reimbursement
In-network providers are reimbursed at 80% of the negotiated fee schedule. Out of network providers are reimbursed at 60% of allowed charges. You will be reimbursed for clean claims in 30 days or less.
- Join the PCIP network
Are you currently in our provider networks serving PCIP enrollees? Find out online at http://www.pciplan.com/ (click on Find a Provider). If you are not in the network and would like to join, click on “Providers” and then on “Network application.” No cost to join.
- Easy verification of benefits
PCIP offers verification of benefits by phone or web, along with toll-free customer service. Call 800-220-7898, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm Central time.
- Free materials for your staff and patients
To order PCIP print materials, go online to http://www.pciplan.com/. Assistance via conference call is also available for staff training.
* PCIP is administered through the U.S. Office of Personnel Management by GEHA in these states, plus the District of Columbia: Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, DC, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
